Pennsylvania natural gas cost: the one Mid-Atlantic fuel priced below average
In a region where every fuel usually prices above the national average, Pennsylvania gas is the exception. Natural gas delivered to Pennsylvania homes cost an average of $13.62 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) in 2024 — about 6% below the U.S. average of $14.50, and the second-cheapest delivered gas in the Middle Atlantic, behind only New Jersey's $13.21 (New York: $16.58). On the unit a Pennsylvania gas bill actually uses, that is about $1.31 per therm. Set beside the state's electricity — 17.77¢ per kWh, 817 kWh a month and a $145.17 average bill in the same year — and its delivered fuels (oil $6.066, propane $3.163), it explains why gas is Pennsylvania's default heating fuel wherever the distribution network reaches.
| Pennsylvania gas in context (2024 unless noted) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Delivered residential gas, Pennsylvania | $13.62 per Mcf — about $1.31 per therm |
| United States average | $14.50 per Mcf — about $1.40 per therm |
| New Jersey / New York | $13.21 / $16.58 per Mcf |
| Electricity (2024; July 2026 snapshot) | 17.77¢ per kWh; 817 kWh/month; $145.17 bill; July 2026 21.72¢ |
| Heating oil / propane (week of Oct 19, 2026) | $6.066 per gallon / $3.163 per gallon — U.S. averages $6.190 / $2.689 |
| Middle Atlantic division electricity (July 2026) | 25.71¢ per kWh (PA, NY, NJ blended) |
Enter your own therms and price them at the Pennsylvania delivered average — then price the same heat in oil gallons and kilowatt-hours to compare fuels fairly.
Open the energy cost calculatorWhat "delivered" means, and why Pennsylvania beats the average
EIA's Table 23 price is the full price at the meter: the gas commodity plus interstate transportation, local distribution, and the fixed customer charges spread across the volumes households actually take. It is not the wellhead or hub price, which is why even producing regions post delivered prices in double digits — Texas, the capital of gas country, delivered at $17.98 per Mcf in the same table, as our Texas deep-dive examines. Pennsylvania's below-average figure reflects the other side of that arithmetic: proximity to Appalachian supply shortens the transportation leg, and a dense, mature distribution network spreads its fixed costs across many customers taking substantial winter volumes. The honest limit of the state table is that it cannot prove those causes — EIA publishes the price, not its decomposition — but the comparison set is instructive: Pennsylvania ($13.62) and New Jersey ($13.21) deliver gas more cheaply than the national average while New York ($16.58), in the same division, delivers it 14% above. Same region, same commodity, three different delivered products.
Gas against the Pennsylvania alternatives
On one heat basis (arithmetic on EIA's published prices and conversion factors, before equipment efficiency), Pennsylvania gas at $13.62 per Mcf costs about $13.14 per million Btu. Heating oil at $6.066 a gallon costs about $43.80 per million Btu (at 138,500 Btu per gallon) — more than three times as much — and propane at $3.163 costs about $34.59 (at 91,452 Btu per gallon). Electricity at 17.77¢ costs about $52.09 per million Btu before efficiency, so a heat pump's two-to-three-times multiplier lands it between propane and gas on fuel cost. RECS puts Middle Atlantic households at 89.0 MMBtu a year and $2,162 of spending, and EIA's Winter Fuels Outlook forecasts Northeast gas-heated households to spend $879 this winter (November through March), against $1,637 for electricity and $1,687 for propane — with the outlook's forecast average residential gas price of $13.44 per Mcf, down 9%, sitting almost exactly on Pennsylvania's 2024 delivered figure. Home EV charging, for completeness, prices at $10.66 per 60 kWh and $59.23 per 1,000 miles at the labeled 3.0 miles-per-kWh assumption, from this site's EV guide.
What EIA does not publish here
Two gaps govern honest use of this page. EIA's gas table publishes price, not household consumption by state, so this site prints no "average Pennsylvania gas bill" — anyone who needs a bill figure must price their own therms, which is what the calculator above is for. And the 2024 annual figure is the latest complete year in the Natural Gas Annual; monthly state delivered prices are not published on the same basis, so there is no honest July-2026-style snapshot for gas to set beside electricity's 21.72¢. What the annual table does establish is durable: in 2024, delivered residential gas in Pennsylvania cost less than the national average and dramatically less than every alternative heating fuel in the state. The state-level starting point remains our Pennsylvania state guide; this page is the natural gas deep-dive behind it, and our Mid-Atlantic page covers the three-state region.
