District of Columbia home energy costs
The average District of Columbia household used 639 kWh of electricity a month in 2024 and paid an average bill of $113.23, at a blended average price of 17.71¢ per kWh — 20% below the U.S. average bill of $142.26. Piped natural gas delivered to District homes cost $16.49 per thousand cubic feet. The District is not a state, but EIA reports it in the same tables, so it gets the same treatment here: every figure is an official EIA number, with its source and period named.

The average price — 17.71¢ per kWh in 2024 — is EIA's blended figure: total residential electricity revenue in the District divided by total residential sales, across every home in the city. It blends fixed customer charges into the per-kWh number, so it will never match the energy rate printed on any single tariff. At 7% above the U.S. average price, District electricity is mid-pack on price; the bill is low because usage is. At 639 kWh a month — 26% below the U.S. average of 863 kWh — the average District home is an apartment or rowhouse, not a detached house, and smaller homes use less energy. The latest monthly snapshot, July 2026 (preliminary), puts the average price at 25.21¢ per kWh; July is a summer month, so read it as a snapshot, not a new annual rate. Natural gas in the District
Natural gas delivered to District homes cost an average of $16.49 per thousand cubic feet (Mcf) in 2024 — 14% above the U.S. average of $14.50. "Delivered" means the full price at the meter: the gas itself plus transportation and the local distribution company's charges. On the unit your bill most likely uses, that is about $1.59 per therm (1 Mcf ≈ 10.37 therms). We publish the price but not an "average gas bill" for the District: the annual price table carries no household consumption figure we can stand behind, so the honest way to size a gas bill is your own therms in the calculator. The natural gas guide covers all 50 states.
Heating oil and propane: no District survey
EIA surveys delivered-fuel prices weekly during the heating season (October through March) — but only in the states where those fuels are common heating fuels: 21 states for heating oil and 38 for propane. The District of Columbia is not in either survey, so there is no official District average price for heating oil or propane, and we do not estimate one. District households that heat with oil or propane pay supplier prices that only their own invoices can document. See the heating oil guide and propane guide for the surveyed states and regions.
Before you compare your bill
- Averages blend every home size in the District — a studio apartment and a large rowhouse are in the same average.
- Annual averages hide the seasons. A July bill and a January bill can each sit far from the annual average month.
- The average price is not a tariff. Your utility's actual rate schedule — including its fixed monthly customer charge — is the number that prices your bill; the EIA average is the benchmark to compare it against.
